The world of IoT technology is said to become more advanced within the next 10 years. Tech experts from CEDIA, the Association for Smart Home Professionals, say that home security will change as it is completely, by the year 2034. Traditional keys and fobs are expected to be replaced by biometric systems that use fingerprints and/or facial recognition for access. Walt Zebre, CEDIA, Senior Director of Technology and Standards, USA says, “I think the big areas we’ll see are the rise of biometrics, the disappearance of remote controls and the possibility of home data being sold by consumers.
“I also think consumers will grow to be even more tech savvy and will drive tech changes as they continue to think differently from manufacturers.” This change is believed to bring a higher level of security, while simplifying the process of entering homes safely.
Also, AI will not be left behind as an essential in smart homes. Steve Moore, SMC Owner and CEDIA’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Winner, suggests that we will be fully reliant on AI. He said, “AI is obviously a huge area of development and conversation in the tech world currently. I believe by 2034 AI will be fully relied upon but working seamlessly in the background across a huge number of devices and technology that will make life a lot more streamlined and accessible for homeowners, but it won’t be hugely visible in the home.”
Working together with AI, robotics will also start to play a role in home living, especially with assisted living. Zebre believes robotics and other robotic devices will become more common and will be helping users with daily tasks around the house.
What Will Entertainment Smart Homes Be Like In 2034?
Entertainment is also said to be more immersive in 2034. CEDIA’s insights show that homes will have advanced 3D tech, for a new way to experience entertainment, gaming and even remote work. Walt Zebre, Senior Director of Technology and Standards at CEDIA, says that traditional speakers will likely disappear from view.
These will rather be installed into walls or hidden within the home’s structure for a high-quality sound that is similar to those of cinemas and nightclubs. Also, the experts shared, “The garden will become an extension of the home – indoor coming outdoors will be much more the norm. Fully designed/landscaped, outdoor speakers, outdoor kitchens and entertainment systems will be popular as homeowners look to create more with their outdoor space.”

How Smart Homes Will Create Personalised Experiences For Daily Life
Personalisation will also be a big part of smart home tech in 2034. According to CEDIA’s experts, home systems will be able sync with wearable devices as a way to align with the needs, routines and preferences of each user and resident.
This would bring experiences like automatic heating, lighting and entertainment setting being adjusted without manual input. From a health perspective, the tech and wearables will be able to give real-time health stats when you, for example, look into a mirro with health-check technology.
What About Efficient Energy Consumption?
CEDIA believes energy efficiency will also be a major focus when it comes to smart homes going forward. Their studies show that fully solar-powered houses will become more popularly used as homeowners would need to reduce energy costs, and look towards a more sustainable lifestyle overall. They shared, “Every individual house and building will become a power plant with renewable energy sources connected.”
Zebre believes that these innovations are great, but also shares, “Tech is developing quickly in the home environment, there are so many exciting advancements we can expect to see by 2034, but this also opens up lots of questions around security and efficiency of products/services so still a lot of work to be done. The tech developments continue but there is also a great deal to be done to apply current tech to create useful solutions for home owners now, especially in assisted living.”
