Why Physical Security Tech Is Having A Quiet Revolution

Everyone is talking about AI, cybersecurity and the next wave of SaaS. Meanwhile, a less glamorous but equally significant shift has been happening in physical security and it is moving faster than most people in tech circles have noticed.

The alarm industry, for most of its history, was not really a technology industry. It was an installation industry. You hired someone to put a box on your wall, run cables through your skirting boards and hand you a fob. If something triggered, a monitoring centre called you an hour later. The technology was secondary to the service contract.

That model is being quietly dismantled and the parallels with what happened to enterprise software a decade ago are striking.

 

The Stack Is Being Rebuilt From Scratch

 

The interesting companies in physical security right now are not tweaking existing products. They are rebuilding the entire stack: hardware, firmware, communication protocol, cloud infrastructure and end-user application, all developed in-house and designed to work as a coherent system rather than a bundle of third-party components held together by an integration layer.

This matters for the same reason it matters in software: when you own the full stack, you control the reliability, the update cycle, the data and the user experience. You are not dependent on another manufacturer’s sensor talking cleanly to a hub you did not design, routing through a cloud platform you do not control.

Ajax Systems is one of the cleaner examples of this approach applied to physical security. Founded in Kyiv, the company built its own radio communication protocol called Jeweller, specifically for security applications, operating in the 868 MHz band with two-way communication and anti-jamming design. Every device in the ecosystem, from motion detectors to flood sensors to cameras, was built to communicate through that protocol and managed through a single application. No third-party bridges. No compatibility caveats.

 

The Anti-Jamming Problem Nobody Talks About

 

Here is a detail that rarely makes it into consumer security coverage but is technically significant: many wireless alarm systems can be disabled by a signal jammer purchased online for under £50. Disrupt the radio frequency the sensors use to talk to the hub and the system goes silent before anyone has touched a door or window.

This is not a theoretical vulnerability. It is used in real burglaries, and it is one of the reasons professional installers have historically preferred wired systems for high-value installations. The move to proprietary protocols with anti-jamming design closes this gap without requiring cables; a meaningful step forward that the industry has been slow to address.

Multi-Channel Redundancy As a Design Principle

 

The other shift worth noting is communication redundancy. Consumer Wi-Fi cameras fail when the broadband goes down. Serious security infrastructure does not. Modern hubs in the professional tier maintain simultaneous connections across cellular, Ethernet and Wi-Fi so that losing any single channel does not compromise the system.

This is the kind of engineering decision that reveals whether a product was built for real-world conditions or for a product demo. It is also the kind of decision that is invisible to end users until the moment it matters, which is exactly when you need it to have been made correctly.

Physical security is not going to become a software business in the way that, say, payments did. But the companies that treat it as an engineering problem, with the same rigour applied to protocol design, redundancy, and system coherence that you would apply to any critical infrastructure are building products that are genuinely better than what came before.

That is a less exciting story than a Series B announcement or an AI pivot. But it is the kind of progress that tends to compound quietly until it is impossible to ignore.
