SimpleStudy is a fast-growing study app transforming how students revise – widely described as the “Duolingo for exams.” Launched in 2023 by childhood friends Oisín Devoy and Phillip McKenna, the platform was born out of their shared frustration with outdated, expensive study tools that hadn’t changed in decades. They wanted to build something modern, accessible, and genuinely effective for the way young people learn today.
From the start, the founders set out to solve three major problems: traditional revision resources are outdated and uninspiring, students are burnt out before exams even begin, high-quality support is often unaffordable.
SimpleStudy was built to offer a solution, combining AI, gamification, and human-expert content to create a truly engaging, curriculum-aligned revision experience. While some tools offer gamification or AI in isolation, SimpleStudy uniquely blends both with teacher-written, exam-board-aligned materials, ensuring accuracy and educational depth.
SimpleStudy makes exam prep engaging, accessible, and fun. Covering over 60 major exams worldwide, it’s already helping over half a million students across thousands of schools in 25+ countries, helping learners prepare for GCSEs, A-Levels, and SQA exams. Students use bite-sized notes, past papers, quizzes, flashcards, and streak-based motivation to stay consistent and focused – all through a mobile-first design that fits seamlessly into their lives. Ofcom data shows one in five children aged three or four have a phone, and by age eleven, it is nine out of ten. Smartphones and technology power the world kids live in, and rather than banning phones or resisting it, SimpleStudy empowers students to use technology to make learning fun so revision could excite rather than exhaust them.
The impact is clear: 97% of students report improved grades and SimpleStudy users achieve results 22% higher than the national average.
In some regions, such as Ireland and South Africa, uptake has been remarkable – with over a quarter of the entire secondary school student population of Ireland using the platform and 40,000 students joining in the first 30 days of launch in South Africa alone.
Designed for both students and teachers, the platform also supports classroom learning by offering resource recommendations, consistency across subjects, and tools that adapt to different learning needs and speeds.
