About Naked Energy

Naked Energy is a British design and engineering business, leading the global innovation in solar thermal and solar PVT.

Its mission is to decarbonise global commercial and industrial buildings through the deployment of its high impact, and cost-effective solar heat and power technologies.

Naked Energy’s VirtuPVT technology is one of the most innovative products in the market. The Virtu product range converts the sun’s energy into heat and electricity from the same collector.

It delivers up to ten times the carbon savings per m2 in comparison to conventional solar PV.

The tech is now installed on the roof of the iconic British Library, helping maintain the precise temperature and humidity conditions needed to preserve the national collection. It is the largest solar thermal project in the UK.

It was the only tech to get planning permission, given Grade I listed buildings have several extra hoops to jump through, such as ensuring it is invisible from the street level. It provides a template for listed buildings across the UK to follow.

Naked Energy’s combined solar PVT collector is certified by TÜV Rheinland, a leading industry certification body. It was the first solar thermal collector of its kind to receive the certification, confirming it’s the best in the industry.

The business raised £17 million in a Series B funding round led by E.ON and Barclays, and has installed the solar tech on the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park hotel.

The system is expected to generate 39,747 kWh of renewable heat annually, resulting in a 7.3-tonne reduction in carbon emissions each year—equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of over 292 mature trees.

The company was founded in 2013. Christophe Williams, its founder and CEO, worked in the advertising industry for many years, at one point ending up in the Guinness Book of World Records for his work.

Christophe founded Naked Energy because he couldn’t believe that no-one was talking about the decarbonisation of heat. It’s responsible for roughly 50% of all global energy consumption, yet it’s often neglected in favour of electrification.

Electrification is important, but Christophe knew from the start this wasn’t enough to power net zero on its own. He knew that electricity grids didn’t have enough capacity to carry the transition on their own, as seen by widespread power blackouts in Spain earlier this year.

He knew we needed renewable technology that operated independently of the grid.

Naked Energy responded by developing solar thermal collectors that are capable of decarbonising heat cost-effectively and without adding any pressure to the grid.

Naked Energy’s ambition isn’t limited to the UK. Its close partnership with E.ON is leading to a number of projects in 20 countries. With more projects soon to be delivered, the business has been rapidly accelerating and establishing itself as a global leader in the solar thermal industry.
