We founded Newlane to meet the growing global demand for micro-mobility – bikes, e-bikes, and scooters. Our mission is simple: to make urban travel on two wheels safer and more convenient for everyone.

The Newlane folding helmet launched in October 2024 after five years of intensive development. Creating a completely new version of a safety-critical product was exceptionally challenging, particularly as two founders with no product development experience. We faced technical, operational and financial hurdles, from designing a helmet that folded without compromising safety, to navigating patents, certification and manufacturing. At times, we nearly ran out of money – but our commitment to the product and mission kept us going.

We raised £1.7M from angels, venture funds, and Innovate UK, allowing us to build a small, passionate in-house team supported by specialist designers, engineers and manufacturers. We also developed the Newlane brand and marketing campaigns that generated early traction, particularly with London commuters.

In our first year, we have sold 6,500 units, mainly in the UK, with over 200 customer reviews averaging 4.8/5 – all achieved on a modest marketing budget. Beyond our e-commerce store, Newlane helmets are sold on Decathlon UK, Halfords, Amazon and through our first German retail partner, Fahrrad-XXL.

We have forged meaningful partnerships across the micro-mobility ecosystem, working with Brompton, London hire-bike provider Forest, and entering discussions with global helmet manufacturer Abus.

Our biggest industry impact came when Newlane became the world’s first folding helmet to integrate Mips (Multi-directional Impact Protection System), a globally recognized enhanced safety system trusted across cycling, skiing, climbing, and industrial helmets. This integration sets a new benchmark for urban cycling safety and demonstrates that innovative, compact designs can meet the highest safety standards.

Through repeated setbacks, near financial crises and steep learning curves, we have proved that a small, focused team can innovate in a long-established safety category. By combining practicality, safety and convenience, Newlane is not only creating a new category in the helmet market but also shaping how urban riders think about protection and mobility.

Our journey reflects the resilience, creativity and determination required to turn a radical idea into a product that makes a tangible difference. With Newlane, we are helping to redefine the urban cycling experience – making city travel safer, smarter and more accessible for everyone.
