OpenAI And Reddit Sign Deal To Train ChatGPT With Posts

Reddit and OpenAI are working together. The company behind ChatGPT will be integrating Reddit content into OpenAI’s products. This is Reddit’s plan to bring in more revenue sources beyond advertising. Reddit will give OpenAI access to its Data API, so that ChatGPT and other OpenAI products can use Reddit’s real-time and structured content.

This integration is a way to improve user experience by helping users find and engage with Reddit communities, particularly with recent topics. “Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything,” said Steve Huffman, Reddit’s Co-Founder and CEO.

So, a part of the deal involves OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner. This partnership is after Reddit’s recent agreement with Alphabet to allow Google to use its content for training AI models. This deal with Alphabet is reportedly worth $60 million per year.

How Will This Affect Reddit And OpenAI Users?

The new AI-powered features built on OpenAI’s platform are for users and moderators. These features are made to improve the UX by making content discovery easier and improve community engagement. “We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information,” said Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO.

For OpenAI, this partnership allows its AI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content. This is expected to provide more accurate and relevant information to users interacting with ChatGPT and other OpenAI products.

What Does This Mean Financially, And For Business?

Reddit’s shares went up by 12% in after-hours trading following the announcement. The company intends to branch out its revenue streams, and selling data for AI training is seen as a main form of income over and above advertising. This strategy is already showing results, as Reddit reported strong revenue growth and improving profitability in its first earnings report since going public.

What About Security?

Reddit has stated that this partnership aligns with its Public Content Policy, ensuring user privacy is maintained. Content accessed through Reddit’s Data API cannot be used for commercial purposes without Reddit’s approval. This comes after discussions on how user-generated content is used to train AI models.

In March, Reddit received a letter from the Federal Trade Commission regarding its data-licensing practices related to AI training. The FTC’s inquiry focuses on Reddit’s sale, licensing, or sharing of user-generated content with third parties for AI model training. Reddit has assured that its data licensing efforts respect user rights and are in line with its values.

What Does This Mean For The AI And Tech Industry?

This partnership contributes to the trend of tech companies collaborating to leverage user-generated content for AI training. OpenAI and other tech firms are increasingly forming content deals with publishers to address concerns about copyright infringement and data use. Legal challenges around using copyrighted material for AI training are ongoing, with notable cases involving high-profile individuals like Game of Thrones author George RR Martin.
