Startup Of The Week: NatureMetrics

  • NatureMetrics is a startup that specialises in global nature intelligence technology.
  • The company uses eDNA to detect hard-to-find species and generate data for companies to report on their biodiversity impact.
  • Through environmental DNA biodiversity monitoring, they are able to help companies meet targets and report better.

What is NatureMetrics?

NatureMetrics is a ‘nature intelligence’ company that is finding new ways to collect biodiversity data through eDNA sampling.

By analysing genetic material that is available from air, soil and sediment, the company can view entire ecosystems and detect thousands of species in one go.

As plants, animals and bacteria leave traces in nature, NatureMetrics’ technology is able to analyse and detect diversity at scale.

By mixing their eDNA sampling with AI, NatureMetrics is able to find even rare or hidden species that traditional surveys might miss.

Through the company, users can either get one off sampling kits or ongoing consultancy, helping businesses measure their biodiversity impact.

To date, NatureMetrics has been used by over 600 companies across 110 countries. It has become a go-to for businesses and governments looking to measure, improve or track their biodiversity.

What Makes NatureMetrics Unique?

NatureMetrics is unique because it’s currently one of the only viable ways to accurately measure biodiversity. By combining DNA analysis with AI-driven insights, it is able to produce quicker and more accurate reports than alternatives.

But one of the main things that makes NatureMetrics stand out is the fact that it is also able to detect species that are rare or hidden. This allows companies and governments to get more accurate pictures of biodiversity, helping them report, plan and improve more easily.

NatureMetrics has become so popular that it has raised over $30 million to date, with investors like BNP Paribas, Systemiq, 2150 and Ananda Impact Ventures behind it. (Bloomberg Finance)

Is There A Market For Biodiversity Monitoring?

There is, and it’s growing. Many companies now need to report regularly on their environmental impact, but finding accurate tools can be difficult.

According to Salesforce, around 50,000 companies in the European Union will have to formally report on their corporate social responsibility from 2029.

Through this, they will have to report on:

  • How their companies affect the environment.
  • Scope 3 emissions.

The reports will need to be independently verified and in line with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). This leaves a huge demand for biodiversity data providers.

The problem with other options is that they currently fail to detect all species, especially those that are around in low numbers.

For example, NatureMetrics identified 70% more fish species than other methods at an EDF offshore wind site – allowing them to get a more accurate picture of their impact. It also helped Forestry England capture biodiversity across 250,000 hectares, one of the most in-depth studies to date.

With biodiversity becoming a key reporting metric, NatureMetrics is well-placed to help companies meet regulations and measure their impact more effectively.
