Startup Of The Week: Remilk

  • Remilk is a food tech startup that has created lab-grown milk with milk proteins, without using a single cow.
  • The dairy industry is highly unsustainable, meaning many are looking for cleaner options that have the same nutritional benefits as regular milk, without harming animals or the environment.
  • By using precision fermentation, Remilk creates animal-free dairy proteins, identical in taste and nutrition to cow-based dairy, but without cholesterol, lactose, hormones, or antibiotics.

What is Remilk?

Remilk is a food tech startup that is setting out to take on the dairy industry. The company has created a completely sustainable and animal-free way to produce real dairy using microbial fermentation.

Their mission? To offer a dairy substitute that has the same taste and nutritional value as the real thing, without any animals involved.

It’s no secret that the dairy industry is cruel. Cows are kept pregnant to produce milk and sometimes placed in tight holding cells on packed farms. The vegan industry has pushed alternatives like oat milk, almond and soy, but none of these come with the same nutritional benefits as dairy.

When it comes to the environment, the case is just as strong. Dairy farming is one of the biggest global contributors to greenhouse gases. Additionally, on average, it takes 628 litres of water to produce just one litre of milk.

But now, Remilk has created real lab-grown milk that gives drinkers all the taste and benefits of dairy, whilst also staying ethical and sustainable.

The product is created by putting cow DNA into yeast, then fermenting it to create the same proteins found in milk. These are then blended with non-animal fats, sugars and nutrients to produce dairy products that look, taste, and feel like the real thing.

But the product isn’t just ethically good. It comes with no lactose, no cholesterol and no hormones, making it a product that tastes just as good as the real thing, but is far better for the planet, animals, and our bodies.

What Makes Remilk Unique?

What makes Remilk unique is that it doesn’t just make a milk alternative, it makes real milk – just without the cow.

Using fermentation, Remilk is able to produce milk proteins in a way that is much more sustainable and ethical. This means their products have the same taste, texture and nutrition as traditional milk, but with 97% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and 10% less water.

Unlike other dairy alternatives on the market, there’s no need to compromise on flavour or nutrition, it’s just as good – if not better – than regular milk, just without needing a cow.

Is There A Market For Animal-Free Dairy?

Absolutely, and after the vegan revolution, it’s booming.

According to Grand View Research, the global dairy alternative market size was valued at $32.77 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $66.91 billion in 2030.

This is driven by consumers wanting to make more sustainable, ethical and healthy choices. But a lot of that market is still made up of plant-based milks like soy, almond and oat, which don’t have the same taste or nutritional benefits as real dairy.

Remilk changes this by creating a dairy alternative that has all the elements of real milk, without needing to use animals. This means Remilk is not just a good option for those that want sustainable options, but it’s also a good choice for those that are lactose intolerant or want lower cholesterol options.

Because of this, Remilk  is placing themselves truly at the heart of the dairy revolution.
