About NAKIVO
NAKIVO is a US-based software company delivering backup, ransomware resilience and disaster recovery for virtual, physical, cloud and SaaS environments. It helps organizations protect critical business data and prepare for recovery from cyberattacks and other disruptions.
Founded in 2012 in Campbell, California, by Bruce Talley, Sergei Serdyuk and Nail Abdalla, NAKIVO entered the market as virtualization was expanding rapidly. Organizations needed simpler, more affordable ways to protect virtualized infrastructure. The company began with VMware data protection and broadened its platform as customer environments became more diverse.
One major challenge NAKIVO overcame was building a global software business without external funding rounds. The company grew through revenue and reinvestment while competing with significantly larger vendors, maintaining a focus on product development, affordability, reliability and ease of administration.
A second challenge was adapting data protection to evolving ransomware threats. NAKIVO expanded its capabilities with backup immutability, AES-256 encryption, pre-recovery malware scanning and role-based access control. These features help organizations protect data, manage access and identify threats before recovery.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication now protects VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, Microsoft 365, Amazon EC2, physical Windows and Linux machines, and NAS file shares. A centralized web-based interface helps IT teams manage protection across supported workloads and reduce routine administration.
Today, NAKIVO is headquartered in Sparks, Nevada, and serves more than 17,000 customers across 190 countries and territories. These include SMBs, enterprises, public sector organizations, educational institutions and managed service providers. NAKIVO contributes to the technology ecosystem by making ransomware resilience accessible to organizations that cannot afford complex legacy systems. Its combination of backup, replication, recovery verification and disaster recovery orchestration helps IT teams plan and test recovery workflows within a single platform.
Through its partner and MSP programs in the US IT channel, resellers and service providers can deliver backup, disaster recovery and ransomware recovery services to their own customers. Multi-tenant management and remote connectivity capabilities support providers managing multiple customer environments, extending access to data protection through local IT services.
NAKIVO won a Top InfoSec Innovator award from Cyber Defense Magazine in 2026, earning recognition as Market Disruptor in Data Protection. CRN named NAKIVO among the 40 Coolest Data Recovery, Observability and Resiliency Vendors in the 2026 Storage 100. The solution also holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating on Gartner Peer Insights. Vice President of Product Management Sergei Serdyuk was also recognized as a 2026 Security Innovator.
From its California origins to its Nevada headquarters, NAKIVO has grown as a self-funded data protection provider. Its continuing focus is to make advanced backup, recovery and ransomware resilience capabilities practical and accessible for businesses and service providers with different resources and requirements, from small organizations to large enterprises.
