About ABBYY
Challenges overcome
ABBYY operates in an increasingly competitive market, with startups and major tech companies like AWS and Google also offering OCR and primitive Intelligent Document Processing (IDP). Additionally, the rise of large language models (LLM) has driven hype around general-purpose AI and one-size-fits-all solutions for document processing causing confusion in the market.
ABBYY overcame these market challenges by emphasising its purpose-built AI specifically designed for document-centric enterprise processes, prioritising accuracy, control, and transparency. To strengthen its competitive advantage, it invested heavily in R&D and its multimodal AI approach using small language models (SLM) for document processing. These can be found in its Purpose-Built AI Centre alongside a Secure LLM Gateway that enables a hybrid approach to using the power of LLMs with the precision and accuracy of SLMs.
The company also educated the market by delivering results of global surveys that revealed FOMO being a driver for AI in 2024 and the disillusionment of GenAI in 2025. It also hosted events such as the AI Summit and Ascend Series to highlight the gap between AI hype and the realities of enterprise-grade Document AI.
Impact on the AI industry
ABBYY’s influence is reflected in its 20% growth in its global partner ecosystem in 2025, with organisations including Deloitte, Microsoft, IBM, and Blue Prism using its AI to drive large-scale document automation. Partners and customer realise that as AI adoption grows in regulated sectors, ABBYY is advancing trusted Document AI solutions to power agentic automation. Its sustained investment in R&D is reflected in 22 new patents and consistent analyst leadership, marked by eight consecutive years as a leader by Everest Group, and others.
ABBYY’s industry leadership is reinforced by customer impact. Connells Group processes over 8,000 supplier invoices monthly, but rapid 2025 growth made its manual email-based system unsustainable. ABBYY and Blue Prism Cloud delivered a fully automated invoice processing solution – from email intake and data extraction to system entry – reducing manual work and improving accuracy without adding headcount.
ABBYY also advocates an AI Risk Management Policy aligned with the EU AI Act to promote responsible, transparent, and trustworthy AI.
ABBYY, alongside IBM, Nvidia and Red Hat, established the DocLang working group with Linux Foundation. DocLang is an open, AI-native document format that preserves meaning, layout, and context, improving document interpretation and governance for generative AI and agentic systems.
