About Azhar and Born Maverick

Bioscientist Azhar Murtuza founded Born Maverick in 2019 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The company has been selected by Innovate UK as one of the UK’s 12 most impactful high growth startups of 2022, and is currently part of Innovate UK KTN’s Sustainable Impact Investment Programme accelerator.

Originally from India, Azhar came to the UK to study for his International MBA at Queen’s University Belfast. He is continuously working on identifying new sustainable resources and eco-innovative methods to bring down the costs of multifunctional proteins.

Born Maverick is a group of ventures set to change the dynamics of the food ecosystem and power the growth of the sustainable food industry.

Born Maverick has developed a range of products, from seafood alternatives made out of seaweed to plant-based milk/eggs/adaptogen lollies, algal proteins with hydrocolloids and cultivated meat. The key objective is to license these unique formulations and ingredients to manufacturing and branding partners that have capabilities and expertise in delivering these products through pre-established distribution networks.

Ultimately, Born Maverick aims to play an instrumental role in strengthening the food ecosystem through bringing more investors and industry players on board who share the same value and ethos of saving the planet by willing to adapt and be a part of this food revolution.

The company has already won contracts with several major private label manufacturers in both the UK and Nordic markets.

Azhar pursues his mission by continuously developing Born Maverick’s diversified product portfolio, while also working closely with companies that are looking to adapt their existing infrastructure to utilise his company’s innovations – bringing together partners from ‘farm to fork’ and across the supply chain.

I’m most excited for them to license the unique formulations and ingredients to manufacturing and branding partners to achieve food sustainability at scale!”
