Founded in 2020, Weconnect Africa is a telecommunication service for Diaspora communities in UK to Africa and vice-versa at affordable rates. They aim to provide an alternative to services such as Whatsapp.
This is because the African Diaspora have been exploited by poor rates, inability to show callers identification, expiry dates on credit balance and hidden charges such as connection and disconnection costs. Making basic communication with loved ones and doing business across the two continents costly, particularly for small business.
App to App calls may seem like they are taking over the communication traffic. However, internet access, costs, network reliability and access to smartphones is can be a barrier. The introduction of taxes to receive voice calls as well as conflict zones mean that there are more network blackouts even in developed African countries.
This is why Weconnect Africa becomes increasingly important. Ensuring that the Diaspora community and those in Africa are getting the best prices at their point of most need is crucial.
Registered users or businesses are also able to call UK fixed lines from Africa when traveling using the App which eradicates roaming charges completely. All they require is WiFi to connect to fixed lines in UK, such as office lines.
The service started during lockdown, and Njore has had to overcome the challenge of being able to physically advertise at events.
The service is already running and has been over the last two years. The main challenges have been marketing costs. A full infrastructure already exists, including mobile apps, billing platform, and international call connectivity.
The plans for the next 12 months is to market more in order to increase the traffic from the African corridor to the UK. This will grow the business exponentially and also target businesses that are communicating between the UK and Africa.
