Through scientific innovation and collaborative partnerships with our customers, we’re pioneering sustainable animal farming practices that respect animals, people, and the planet, meeting demand while honouring the capabilities of the farming community.
We have meticulously worked towards creating more sustainable animal farming, all while overcoming several challenges.
One key challenge was to set rigorous science-based target (SBTi) requirements for greenhouse gas emissions reporting and reduction. In 2019 DSM aimed to cut total direct emissions (scope 1 and 2) from 2016 levels by 30% by 2030. This goal was revised upwards several times, reaching 59% reduction by 2030. In 2023, two companies merged to become dsm-firmenich. We’re now working on a new sustainability strategy that aims higher, goes further, and moves faster.
Another key challenge was how to effectively measure the environmental impact of agricultural operations in a way that is credible in the eyes of various stakeholders and economically attractive for the agrifood industry. That’s why we created Sustell™.
Sustell™ is the leading LCA software platform providing the food value chain with a credible, science-based approach using primary farm and feed data to measure the environmental footprint of farm animals and map a course for a greener future.
Armed with explicit data and scientifically validated results, we catalysed a profound industry-wide mindset transformation. Rather than fearing judgment, producers embraced the challenge, recognising the imperative to ascend the ‘race to the top’ with sustainability credentials, propelled primarily by burgeoning consumer demands. Our Sustell™ platform has significantly reduced environmental footprints at farms and enabled data-driven decisions, that improve productivity, farm profits and sustainability.
Another major challenge is methane, a short-lived but powerful greenhouse gas. Cow burps account for around 40% of global methane emissions. We created Bovaer®, a breakthrough methane-reducing feed supplement that reduces cows’ enteric methane emissions to improve the sustainability of meat and dairy products. On average, it reduces emissions by 30% from dairy cows and 45% from beef cattle.
So far, Bovaer® has recorded methane emissions savings of 8792 tons of CO2e: equivalent to taking nearly 1,800 cars off the road every year. With the growing adoption of Bovaer®, these emissions savings will significantly increase in the future.
The achievements of dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition and Health go way beyond statistical figures. Unlike other sustainability efforts, we have been able to create an ecosystem that allows profitability and sustainability to coexist and feed into each other. Barriers of perception and technological feasibility have been altered making real progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ushering in an era of sustainable development in the animal protein industry.
