“I recently watched an interview with Amy Jeanne Trask who is the former CEO of the Oakland Raiders, an American football team based in California. I’m paraphrasing but she said that during her time spent as a sports executive, she stood out and was respected amongst her peers, not because she was a woman, but because she was the best person for the job. It was a very moving and inspirational interview, and it reminded me a lot of engineering.”

“Like football, engineering is a male dominated industry. However, the number of female students is quickly growing. These young women who are entering the STEM world should know that they will advance in their career based on their performance and abilities, not by their gender. The world needs engineers. There are endless technical problems that need solutions, and these problems do not care if you are male or female. They simply need the most qualified and motivated individuals to solve them.”

“This is a big reason for starting my online business Engineering Expectations. I want to show that with the right mindset anyone can be a great engineer, as long as they have the attitude and perseverance to do so. I help send this message through my online camps that highlight the vast array of skills used to succeed in engineering. These camps are primarily focused on teens who are debating their major heading into college, but anyone is welcome. Albert Einstein exemplifies this thought process when he famously said, “Genius is 1% talent and 99% hard work”.”
