Meet Henry Humphreys, Founder and Managing Partner at Humphreys Law

Humphreys Law is a focused, full-service law firm advising clients in the technology sectors. Our lawyers have decades of combined experience advising on transactions, projects and disputes.

We pride ourselves on providing pragmatic, crystal-clear advice rooted in the context of the underlying commercials. The firm has been ranked amongst the big City and international beasts from the outset, listed amongst the top 20 firms for venture capital in Europe by PitchBook in 2018 and most recently 16th in PitchBook’s 2022 list of UK venture capital firms, punching well above its weight amongst a roster of Goliaths.

What do you think makes this company unique?

I worked for a big city international law in London and Asia before being seconded to work in the tech teams at ITV and Channel 4 – this brings a somewhat unique level of insight and experience.

As a founder myself, I also understand how hard the journey to scale can be and the firm is genuinely independent, aligned with our tech clients in a way that compares favourably with our competition that are usually full service for all sectors.

Being solely focussed on tech, our lawyers are not distracted by competing demands from other sectors and the fact we do not have overseas offices means that we can choose who we refer our clients to internationally and who we brings into deals to advise where offshore advice is needed.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?

We started life as just me, a laptop and a printer and from the outset, Humphreys Law has been advising on all aspects of venture capital fundraisings, acting for technology companies and investors. Almost five years later, we’re now a ‘full service for tech’ and advise on the full tech lifecycle.

That means advising VC fund managers on ‘up stream’ fund formations, advising on the ‘downstream’ investments into tech ventures, advising on all the ‘business as usual’ matters that tech ventures need help with (IP, data protection, tax, regulatory, etc) and then on M&A deals when they exit. We believe that we are the only firm in London focused only on tech who can provide that spread of advice.

What can we hope to see from Humphreys Law in the future?

More of the same – we are now a team of about 30 people and have doubled in size by revenue year-on-year. What we won’t do though is move our focus away from technology and we won’t budge from our mission to become one of the leading UK firms servicing that market.

Annette Beresford became a partner in summer 2021 and there are plans to add to the partnership in 2022/3. Winston Penhall joined in 2021 also, to add serious heft to the funds practice and has been successful in signing up a number of household name institutions as clients. The firm is also fast developing a network of ‘best friend’ independent firms in all the major technology jurisdictions and beyond, collaborating with those firms on international deals and insight pieces on how market practice differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
