Google replaced the familiar blue links at the top of search pages with an AI Overview that answers questions in complete sentences. According to analytics group Semrush, Reddit appears in those summaries more often than any site except Quora. The company says that the forum’s ongoing and in-depth discussions cover rare questions that normal reference pages ignore.
That advantage grew after Reddit signed a reported $60 million licensing agreement with Google in 2024. The search firm gained permission to train its models on millions of subreddit posts, while Reddit secured a promise that its content would feature more clearly on results pages.
Reddit listed its shares last year and faces pressure to show progress, so any extra visibility seems useful at first glance. Executives often describe the forum as the internet’s “front page,” and Google’s AI appears to agree.
What Makes The Bots Use Reddit Threads?
AI Overviews build answers by taking short passages from across the web. Semrush’s researchers explain that Reddit users write in plain language, share first hand experience and debate niche problems. Algorithms can lift those lines and slot them straight into a conversational summary.
The study mentions that Quora performs well for the same reason, and that is, both sites host real life anecdotes rather than polished marketing copy. Google’s partnership with Reddit further strengthens that link, giving the search engine direct access to fresh material every day.
While Wikipedia still tops overall citations in many traditional searches, Reddit overtakes it when questions turn highly specific, such as fixing an obscure gadget or decoding a pop culture reference. Google’s models “trust” the wisdom of crowds for that last kilometre of detail.

More people now land on Reddit pages through Google than ever before. Brokers at Redburn examined the traffic and found that much of it comes from “logged out” visitors. These passers by read one answer, then depart without joining a community or giving an upvote.
Such fleeting visits matter because Reddit’s advertising income depends on time spent and repeat engagement. A reader who never signs in is worth far less than a daily contributor who comments and subscribes to subreddits.
Google’s own design may even shorten sessions. The AI Overview often satisfies a query at a glance, so readers feel no need to click through, let alone linger.
How Have Investors Reacted To AI Overview?
When Google switched on its full AI Mode in May, Reddit shares fell. Traders worried that the very feature that name checks the forum could also keep people away from it. A natural language answer that quotes Reddit but shows the answer upfront gives users little reason to open the thread.
Redburn’s note describes the growth driven by casual readers as “misconstrued,” warning that impressive headline numbers conceal a fragile base. Market confidence will depend on whether Reddit can turn those brief encounters into deeper involvement.
Google also rolled out new analytics for moderators, hoping to keep volunteer community managers happy and encourage more debate. Longer threads produce more ad impressions, but that cycle rests on convincing users to log in and stay.
