Microsoft And Vodafone Sign 10 Year Deal for Digital Transformation

Vodafone and Microsoft have signed on a 10-year strategic partnership that is to aim at changing the digital space for businesses and consumers across Europe and Africa, totaling over 300 million users.

Vodafone pledged a £1.5 billion investment over the next 10 years, with a focus on making use of Microsoft’s generative AI capabilities and expanding its managed IoT connectivity platform. Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone Group CEO, highlights, “Vodafone has committed to accelerating the digital transformation of our business customers, especially small and medium-sized companies, and enhancing the quality of customer experience for consumers.”


Enhancing Customer Satisfaction Through Generative AI


To boost customer satisfaction, Vodafone and Microsoft will tap into the potential of Microsoft Azure OpenAI. This partnership aims to provide seamless, real-time, and highly personalised experiences across all Vodafone customer touchpoints. The integration of AI technology extends to Vodafone’s digital assistant, TOBi, operational in 13 countries. Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, emphasiaes the vast opportunities this new AI generation unlocks globally.

Employees will also witness a transformative shift as they actively use the AI capabilities of Microsoft Copilot.

IoT Scaling and Financial Inclusion in Africa


Microsoft commits to investing in Vodafone’s standalone global Internet of Things (IoT)-managed connectivity platform. As of April 2024, this platform, set to become a separate business entity, will witness further growth and expansion. Microsoft’s financial backing aims to attract new partners and customers, driving the proliferation of applications and connecting more devices, vehicles, and machines.

Also, the partnership sets its sights on Africa, with plans to enhance financial inclusion through the expansion of M-Pesa. By integrating it with Azure, Microsoft aims to scale M-Pesa, already the largest financial technology platform in Africa. The goal is to launch new cloud-native applications and implement a purpose-led program enriching the lives of 100 million consumers and 1 million SMEs across the continent.

In an effort to accelerate its cloud transformation, Vodafone will modernise its data centers on Microsoft Azure.
