About Habitat Learn

Habitat Learn was founded eight years ago, beginning as Note Taking Express, an app and web platform that provides students with professional summary notes from recordings.

In 2021 Note Taking Express became Habitat Learn. Allowing for the range of services to expand and give life to the idea of the UDL (universal design for learning) classroom, switching from solutions based on ideas of disability as a problem on an individual level to solutions that tackle systemic issues around accessibility and inclusion in higher education, and focuses on designing these services to reflect today’s diverse student population.

Habitat Learn solves accessibility issues through a unique ecosystem of services that work alone or together. Giving higher education institutions flexibility as they pick and choose a combination of services to suit their student’s needs.

These services include:
Professional summary notes from any recording.
AI Captions perfected by people for both speed and accuracy.
Live-streaming to digitise in-person learning.
Accessible video conferencing.

In implementing these solutions, the greatest challenge is connecting with the various departments within higher education institutions. Tackling this challenge starts by finding a solution to suit their needs, coordinating the implementation of new technology, navigating concerns regarding copyright and privacy, training and the big one, funding.

Habitat Learn has navigated these challenges by working in close partnerships with higher education institutions through multiple piloting schemes, always remaining open to user feedback.

Following these piloting schemes this year, they’re excited to expand the range of services available in the UK. Ready for the new school year, students at higher education institutions in the UK will have access to our captioning service Messenger Pigeon. The service has been adapted to fit the Disabled Students’ Allowance’s requirements. Ensuring students in higher education receive the accommodations they deserve to participate in their learning fully.
