What Are Reverse Osmosis Filters And How Do They Work?

Reverse osmosis is a water treatment process that purifies water by separating the pure water from the contaminants in it, by method of filtering the water through a semipermeable membrane.

The water is then forced through the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, the least concentrated side of the membrane flows to the more concentrated side of the membrane to finally be reduced to pure drinking water, which is called permeate. More and more houses, properties, offices and more are turning to reverse osmosis filters as a way to ensure they are drinking clean water, with lower levels of chloride and fluoride, whilst still containing the minerals needed to keep the water healthy and hydrating.

The concentrated water that remains is called the waste or brine.


How Does A Reverse Osmosis System Work?


A residential reverse osmosis system typically passes water through three filters before it’s ready to drink. These stages may vary depending on the amount of prefilters and postfilters they have.

The first stage of the system removes sediment and chlorine with a prefilter. The second stage of the system forces the water through a semipermeable membrane to remove dissolved solids and contaminants. Then finally, the last stage passes the water through a postfilter to purify it before entering a dedicated faucet.

Under-sink RO systems are installed beneath the kitchen sink and the purified water is delivered through a dedicated faucet. These systems also have storage tanks that stores the water, ready to dispense.

Countertop RO systems connect to a faucet can be removed, which is the ideal option for people renting their homes or don’t want to modify their plumbing. These systems are usually less powerful than Under-sink RO systems, but they are still effective at purifying drinking water.
