About SML Group
SML Group offers tech-driven and sustainable digital identification solutions to a vast range of retailers to enhance their brand transformation and prosperity. SML uses end-to-end Radio Frequency Identification (“RFID”), labelling, technologies, and software to deliver proven results and rapid ROIs to brands with one purpose in mind: to power brand transformation in the new era of retailing.
SML operates with moral, ethical, and responsible business practices, and expects the same high standards for its employees, business partners, and customers. Everything SML does is designed to have a positive impact on our communities and the environment in which we live.
Since 2018, SML’s transition to renewable energy sources has led to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 20% and is committed to reducing gas scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 40% by 2030. In addition, SML has proactively been switching to renewable energy, from installing solar panels at a few of its 20+ manufacturing facilities to obtaining Renewable Energy Certificates in Europe that declare the electricity consumed in the region is sourced from 100% renewable energy.
SML’s hard work for sustainability doesn’t stop there, as at each of our production locations, our operations team carefully designs and plans workshops with optimized energy consumption in mind. Through good planning and careful management, SML is able to move its machinery and equipment to limited workshops on sites. Energy consumption is reduced as spare workshops are not in use. For example, at one of SML’s manufacturing facilities in China, 3 RFID label workshops are consolidated into 1, reducing about 15% of its GHG emissions in 2021 compared to 2018.
SML advocates for sustainable material use and packaging by reducing the use of virgin material inputs, resources could be kept for use longer in the closed loop. We offer customers our EcoInspire™ series, a sustainable product collection made with easily recyclable materials including recycled yarn, tape, paper and polybags. In addition, we use recycled materials as our own packaging in the majority of our production sites, including FSC-certified carton boxes and GRS-certified plastic bags. To recapture ‘waste’ as a resource to manufacture new materials and products, we recover most of our
waste by recycling.
SML also has waste management strategies put into place. When recycling is not available, SML looks for ways to recover this waste by energy recovery and get it prepared for reuse. Thus SML is able to reduce its landfilled waste as much as possible and minimize waste leakage out of the closed-loop system. In 2021, SML achieved almost 90% of our waste being landfill-free.
Furthermore, SML’s item-level RFID solutions including its ClarityⓇ software have successfully helped several retail brands such as Stadium, a leading sports retailer in Sweden, and Siman Group, a department store chain in Central America, improve inventory accuracy from 70% to 99% and from 65% to 95%, respectively, leading to a dramatic increase in sales.
