When someone says “innovative technology”, our brains tend to jump to the dramatic stuff, from flying cars and human-like robots to sci-fi gadgets that look completely out of place in everyday life. These days, it sometimes feels like a company can give an old product a new design, add a sleek finish or add a tiny AI chip and we’ll all nod along as if we’ve just witnessed the future materialise in front of our eyes.
Technology has always been about solving problems, but somewhere along the way, we’ve become a little distracted by the idea that innovation has to mean creating something completely new. The Bioloon, developed by researchers at Imperial College London, is a perfect example. It takes the party balloon, a product that’s been around since 1824, and uses new materials to change what happens after the party is over.

Why Innovation Doesn’t Need To Mean Something Totally New
We usually associate innovation with something completely new, whether that’s a new product, a new category or a completely different way of doing something. Solving existing problems doesn’t always get the same attention as creating something completely new.
A familiar product gives researchers something to work with rather than starting from scratch. People already know how it works, so the focus can be on improving the part that causes a problem. That could mean changing the materials, making it more efficient or finding a way to reduce its environmental impact without changing what people actually use it for.
The Problem With Traditional Balloons
The party balloon might seem harmless, especially when it’s made from natural latex, but these balloons go through a process called sulphur vulcanisation, which uses substances including sulphur accelerators, antioxidants and activators. Researchers at Imperial College London say these additives make the material harder to biodegrade and can contribute to chemicals entering the environment.
The Bioloon tackles that problem without trying to replace the balloon itself. Imperial PhD researcher Juliana Cumming spent three years developing a material that combines natural latex with a biodegradable polymer without relying on the traditional chemical stabilisers. The result can still be inflated like a typical balloon, while testing suggests it can fully biodegrade in around nine months in soil, seawater and deionised water.
I’m not really interested in a party balloon becoming technologically exciting. But, if three years of research can make me look at one and think “actually, that’s pretty clever”, I suppose they’ve done something right. And they’ve found a solution to arguably the problem one could have with the humble balloon.
Where The Bioloon Could Go Next
The Bioloon doesn’t need to stop at party decorations. The researchers say the material could potentially be used for products including household and surgical gloves, latex clothing and other latex-based items. That could open the door for the material to be adapted for products that already rely heavily on latex, without the need to replace the products.
There’s no new system to figure out or complicated instructions to follow, and thankfully, I don’t think we’re heading towards a world where your birthday decorations require a software update (I hope). The technology can stay in the background while the product continues doing what people already expect it to do – just better.
What If We Fixed More Of What We Already Use?
Maybe we’ve been looking for innovation in the wrong places. We’re so used to seeing technology presented as “the next big thing” that it’s easy to overlook the work happening on products we barely think twice about. It might not have the same wow factor as a brand-new innovation, but smaller improvements can still make a meaningful difference. Making an everyday product safer or more efficient might not change the world overnight, but it can change the way people use it without asking them to change their lives.
The Bioloon shows that innovation doesn’t need to change the way we live in order to be useful. Sometimes, the best part in all of this is making a small change that solves a problem we’ve just accepted for years. Even if, at the end of it, we’re still just blowing up a balloon.
