About NAKIVO Inc
NAKIVO is a US-based software development company providing backup, ransomware protection, and disaster recovery for virtual, physical, cloud, and SaaS environments.
Founded in 2012 in Campbell, California, NAKIVO was created by a group of experienced technology professionals that included Bruce Talley, Sergei Serdyuk, and Nail Abdalla. The company entered the market at a time when virtualisation was developing rapidly and many organisations needed simpler and more affordable ways to protect increasingly virtualised infrastructure. NAKIVO initially focused on VMware data protection and gradually expanded its technology as business infrastructure became more diverse.
One of the major challenges NAKIVO overcame was building a global software business without relying on external funding rounds. The company grew through revenue and reinvestment while competing in a market that included significantly larger technology vendors. This approach placed a strong emphasis on product development, affordability, reliability, and ease of administration from the early stages of the business.
Over time, NAKIVO Backup & Replication expanded from its original VMware focus to protect a much broader range of infrastructure. The platform now supports environments including VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, Microsoft 365, Amazon EC2, physical Windows and Linux machines, NAS systems, and other workloads. These capabilities are brought together through a centralised web-based interface, allowing organisations to manage data protection across increasingly diverse IT environments.
Today, NAKIVO is headquartered in Sparks, Nevada, and serves more than 16,000 customers across 190 countries and territories. Its customer base includes SMBs, enterprises, public sector organisations, educational institutions, and managed service providers. In the United States, NAKIVO contributes to the technology ecosystem by providing organisations and IT service providers with data protection technology designed to maintain data availability and support recovery from hardware failures, human error, cyberattacks, and other disruptions.
The company also participates in the broader US IT channel through its partner and MSP programs, giving resellers and service providers technology they can use to deliver backup and disaster recovery services to their customers. This channel-focused approach has helped NAKIVO extend its reach beyond direct software sales and support an ecosystem of IT providers serving businesses of different sizes.
NAKIVO has also gained recognition within the US technology industry. CRN included NAKIVO among the 20 Coolest Cloud Storage Vendors in 2016 and named the company among the 40 Coolest Data Recovery, Observability, and Resiliency Vendors in the 2026 Storage 100. NAKIVO Backup & Replication currently holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating on Gartner Peer Insights and received an Honorable Mention in the 2024 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions.
In 2026, Vice President of Product Management Sergei Serdyuk was also recognised among the Security Innovator Award honorees. From a self-funded technology company established in California, NAKIVO has developed into a global data protection provider headquartered in Nevada. Its growth reflects a consistent focus on making advanced backup, recovery, and cyber resilience capabilities accessible to organisations ranging from small businesses and MSPs to larger enterprises.”
