About Bystro AI
Bystro AI is a Boston-based biotechnology company using artificial intelligence to make genomics faster, more accessible and easier to understand.
Founded by genomic scientist Alex Kotlar, PhD, Bystro is building AI-powered tools that allow researchers, clinicians and individuals to explore complex genetic data using everyday language. Instead of requiring years of specialised bioinformatics training to interpret millions of genetic variants, Bystro allows users to simply ask questions—and receive answers grounded in their DNA and peer-reviewed scientific research.
At the centre of Bystro’s platform is THiNK, an agentic AI system designed specifically for genomics. THiNK can help users analyse genetic variants, investigate disease risk, explore ancestry and population genetics, conduct sophisticated research analyses and turn massive genomic datasets into actionable insights. Unlike general-purpose AI tools, Bystro is designed to ground its answers in actual genetic data and established scientific evidence, helping reduce the risk of AI hallucinations in a field where accuracy matters.
Bystro’s technology is already being used by researchers and institutions including Emory University’s Brain Health Institute, the UC Davis Idea Lab and the IBD Genetics Consortium. Applications range from Alzheimer’s and inflammatory bowel disease research to pharmacogenomics, ancestry, aging, athletic performance and personalised health.
The larger mission is simple: democratise genomics.
For decades, understanding DNA has largely required access to geneticists, bioinformaticians and expensive computational infrastructure. Bystro believes artificial intelligence can dramatically lower those barriers, giving more researchers—and eventually more people—the ability to understand what their genetic information may be telling them.
