Cornerstone Appoints Michael Woods As General Counsel

Cornerstone, the UK’s leading mobile infrastructure services provider, has announced the appointment of Michael Woods to the position of General Counsel. Taking on this role, Woods will assume overall responsibility for the organisation’s legal function, leading a team of thirteen professionals.

The General Counsel’s role will encompass the management of all legal matters affecting the business, with a particular focus on real estate, competition, commercial and disputes matters.

In addition, Woods will provide counsel and strategic support to the senior leadership team (SLT) and the board, managing legal risk across the organisation and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks. This compliance will enable Cornerstone to meet its commercial and operational objectives and drive strategic growth.

His primary regulatory and compliance focuses will include navigating the Electronic Communications Code, which governs how the industry engages with landlords and deploys infrastructure, alongside managing planning and environmental regulations during accelerated rollout and modernisation programmes.

Cornerstone CEO, Pat Coxen welcomed the appointment, commenting, “Cornerstone sits at the very core of the digital infrastructure of the United Kingdom and as a company we act with purpose and real ambition. The addition of Michael to the leadership team, with his extensive international experience in legal, governance, and risk functions, will be a huge help to us in navigating the rapidly evolving regulatory and commercial landscape. With Michael’s leadership and help we can ensure that Cornerstone continues to move at pace, while innovating, and maintaining the highest standards of compliance and integrity.”

Commenting on his appointment, Woods said: “I enjoy being part of organisations that have a positive impact on the everyday lives of people and organisations. Cornerstone is the heart of the UK’s digital infrastructure, and as the sector accelerates investment in next‑generation networks the opportunity to help shape this evolution was an opportunity I could not pass on. From my first meeting, it was clear that Cornerstone is a business that has a strong desire and determination to achieve successful technological and societal milestones. The quality, energy, and commitment of the people I met made an immediate and significant impression.”

Prior to joining Cornerstone, Woods developed an extensive legal career within the real estate, technology and professional services sectors. He has undertaken a variety of senior roles, including serving as General Counsel and Company Secretary within private-equity-backed and multinational publicly listed environments.

His experience includes leading legal, compliance and governance functions across the United Kingdom and throughout the EMEA region, as well as spending a five-year period based in Chicago with a remit across the Americas. Mr Woods obtained his law degree from Trinity College, Dublin, before completing his professional studies in Oxford and qualifying as a solicitor.
