Norwich Tops the Charts as the UK’s Most Social Media-Obsessed City

In a recent study conducted by entertainment experts at PlayOJO, the social media habits of various cities across the UK were analysed, revealing intriguing insights into the extent of social media obsession.

Norwich emerged as the leading city in terms of social media engagement, with its population exhibiting the highest inclination for searching social media-related terms compared to other cities in the UK.

 

Exploring Social Media Search Trends

 

The research delved into Google search trends for a range of popular social media platforms over the course of a year. The platforms under review included heavyweights like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, Reddit, and LinkedIn.

 

TikTok’s City Domination

 

The study’s findings extended beyond overall social media obsession to focus on TikTok’s impact at the city level. Birmingham stood out as the most TikTok-obsessed city, registering approximately 8,754 searches per 100,000 people.

This strong affinity for TikTok placed Birmingham firmly at the forefront. Following closely, Manchester secured the second position with 8,121 searches per 100,000 people, while Blackburn and Norwich held the third and fourth spots, boasting 7,583 and 7,430 searches per 100,000 people, respectively.

 

Norwich’s Remarkable Social Media Engagement

 

Norwich’s social media fascination extended beyond TikTok, earning it the distinction of being the UK’s most social media-obsessed city overall. With a population of over 143,000, the city recorded an impressive 215,000 searches per 100,000 people for social media-related terms, underscoring its exceptional online engagement.

 

 

Wrexham’s High Social Media Engagement

 

Wrexham, with its population of over 65,000, emerged as the second most social media-obsessed city. Its citizens exhibited a remarkable enthusiasm for various social media platforms, reflecting in over 209,000 searches per 100,000 people.

 

Liverpool, Bath, and Manchester’s Rankings

 

Liverpool, with its substantial population of more than 484,000, secured the third spot in social media obsession, tallying over 195,000 searches per 100,000 people.

Contrastingly, the comparatively smaller city of Bath, boasting a population of 94,000, managed to clinch the fourth position with 186,000 searches per 100,000 people. Manchester, a metropolis with a population of over 1.8 million, rounded off the top five with an impressive total of over 185,000 searches per 100,000 people.

 

The Spectrum of Obsession: From Wakefield to London

 

On the other end of the spectrum, Wakefield emerged as the least social media-obsessed city in the UK, with just over 14,000 searches per 100,000 people for social media-related terms. Winchester followed with approximately 37,000 searches per 100,000 people, accompanied by Canterbury, Lancaster, and Doncaster, each falling below 70,000 searches per 100,000 people.

 

Metropolitan Giants: London and Birmingham

 

London, with its vast population, took the 25th spot on the table, registering over 131,000 searches per 100,000 people. Birmingham, boasting a population exceeding 1.1 million, claimed the ninth position, with a substantial 171,000 searches per 100,000 people, highlighting the social media engagement of these metropolitan centres.

 

Preferred Platforms

 

The study also shed light on the most searched social media applications in the UK. YouTube emerged as the frontrunner, capturing the top spot, followed closely by Facebook. Twitter secured the third position, revealing the preferences of the UK’s online community.
