OpenAI and Mattel announced a new partnership , pledging to mix language models with timeless toys such as Barbie and Uno. Mattel explained that ChatGPT Enterprise will sit inside its product teams, letting designers brainstorm characters, play sets, and storylines at a pace that once felt impossible.
Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer of Mattel, said, “Each of our products and experiences is designed to inspire fans, entertain audiences, and enrich lives through play. AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways.”
OpenAI called the venture a first in the toy space and set out to craft age-appropriate, parent-trusted experiences built on the same safety guardrails guiding its other software.
OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, added, “We’re pleased to work with Mattel as it moves to introduce thoughtful AI-powered experiences and products into its iconic brands, while also providing its employees the benefits of ChatGPT.”
How Will ChatGPT Change The Toy Box?
ChatGPT Enterprise will feed quick, natural language interaction into traditional play patterns, meaning action figures, dolls, and board games can answer questions and keep stories moving.
Design teams will also use the model to test voice tones, quiz durability ideas, and refine story arcs long before plastic meets the mould.
Josh Silverman said, “Our work with OpenAI will enable us to leverage new technologies to solidify our leadership in innovation and reimagine new forms of play.”

What Protections Will Be In Place For Kids?
Both partners have made privacy and security the starting point, well before the first AI-powered toy lands on shop shelves. OpenAI said its guards filter harmful language, block personal data leaks, and log conversations for review by safety teams.
Mattel added that any voice or text features will be opt-in and will never contact a child unless the child speaks first. The company plans extra testing with parents and educators to check content, tone, and cultural sensitivity before new digital play sets reach shops.
Licensing teams are also building age gates to stop voice data moving across products for toddlers, children in middle school, and teenagers.
How Does AI Speed Toy Design Up?
ChatGPT Enterprise will sit beside designers during early sketch sessions, turning plain language into colour palettes, accessory lists, and miniature storyboards in minutes. Engineers can then ask the tool to tweak dimensions or create new catchphrases without waiting for an outside script writer.
Early trials inside Mattel have already cut the time between concept and prototype from weeks to days, according to the company. Staff also use the chatbot to scan past play sets, finding hidden links between themes that could support cross-brand story arcs.
One early trial merged Hot Wheels racing with Thomas & Friends characters, producing a comic sketch where the train cheered the car at the finish line. Developers say the tool also is able to draft testing plans.
Lightcap also added in his comment, “With OpenAI, Mattel has access to an advanced set of AI capabilities alongside new tools to enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation at scale.”
