How Did Your Business Journey Begin?

 

My business journey started quite interestingly. I graduated from the National Technical University of Ukraine with a degree in electro-physics engineering. After that, I worked in various companies, but in 2006, I founded my first transportation company “Ukrainian Transport Group.” That was my first step into the world of entrepreneurship, and I haven’t stopped since.

 

How Did You Come Up With The Idea Of Working In Logistics?

 

Logistics has always attracted me. I understood that it is a crucial part of the economy, and I had experience in this field. I started with small international shipments, and thanks to perseverance and the right approach, we quickly expanded the business.

Eventually, our company employed over 100 people. We handled not only transportation but also customs procedures, which significantly increased our competitiveness.

Moreover, logistics plays a key role in biotechnology, as it ensures efficient supply chain management, which is critical for the timely delivery of materials and reagents needed for research and production processes.

For example, in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, such as monoclonal antibodies, it is necessary to consider not only the transportation of active ingredients but also maintaining temperature control, as many of them lose their effectiveness if stored improperly. In this context, the application of concepts like the “cold chain” becomes mandatory.

Optimising logistics processes can reduce the time to market for a product by 20-30%, directly affecting a company’s competitiveness. Modern technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain, are significantly transforming logistics operations.

IoT, for instance, enables real-time cargo tracking, which is especially important for biotech companies working with sensitive products. Temperature and humidity sensors embedded in packaging can transmit data on the condition of goods throughout their journey. This not only prevents spoilage but also ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.

What Led You To Transition Into Biotechnology?

 

In 2018, I realised that I wanted to develop in another field: biotechnology.

I have always been interested in science and innovation, and this direction seemed promising. We started research and development, creating a technology and production line for oil extracts derived from plant and animal raw materials. It was a new challenge, and I am glad I was able to take it on.

Overall, the challenges that logistics faces in biotechnology are multifaceted and require a comprehensive approach. One of the main challenges is compliance with strict regulatory standards, such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and GxP (Good Practice), which require meticulous control over all stages of production and distribution.

For example, when transporting cell cultures, it is necessary to consider not only temperature conditions but also delivery time, as any delay can affect cell viability.

There is also the need for risk management related to supply disruptions, such as raw material shortages or regulatory changes. In this context, risk management methods, such as SWOT analysis and scenario planning, become especially relevant to ensuring the resilience of biotech logistics chains.

 

What Were The Main Difficulties When Transitioning To A New Field?

 

Of course, there were challenges. Each industry has its own nuances. But thanks to my experience in team management and strategy development, we were able to overcome most of them. I have always believed that the key to success is a great team. We brought in specialists who helped us develop and implement new technologies.

In both fields, process organisation and resource management are crucial. In logistics, you need to be able to plan routes and optimise costs, while in biotechnology, you have to manage production processes and control quality. Strategic thinking and the ability to adapt to changes are essential.

 

You Mentioned Your Team. How Do You Build Your Team, And What Qualities Do You Value In People?

 

I believe that a team is the foundation of any successful business. When building a team, it is important to me that people share common values and are willing to work together toward a single goal. I look for not only professionals but also individuals who support each other and are open and honest in communication.

I also value diversity in a team because different perspectives and approaches help us find the best solutions. Everyone should understand their role, and I strive to create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to express their ideas and suggestions. Open communication keeps us on the same page and allows us to respond quickly to changes.

Beyond that, I try to create opportunities for growth, whether through training or experience exchange.
