Researchers in Denmark and Sweden have ventured into a new frontier of artificial intelligence (AI) – predicting political inclinations based on facial characteristics. The study used a dataset of 3,233 images, all of which depicted Danish political candidates. The researchers focused solely on the faces, dismissing all other elements from the pictures.
The crux of this research lay in the application of deep learning techniques. These powerful algorithms predicted whether the subjects of the images leaned towards the left or right-wing political ideologies. The results were surprising. The AI was able to make accurate predictions 61% of the time.
The Emotion-Politics Connection
The study found interesting correlations between facial expressions and political affiliations. Conservative candidates were more likely to have happy expressions, often depicted by their smiles. In contrast, liberal candidates tended to portray more neutral facial expressions.

The study discovered a distinct correlation between attractiveness and political views, particularly for women. Female politicians deemed more attractive according to a facial beauty database were more likely to hold conservative views. However, a similar correlation between attractiveness, gauged by masculine features, and right-wing ideologies was not found for men.
AI: A Double-Edged Sword?
The groundbreaking study not only demonstrated AI’s predictive power but also underscored potential threats to privacy. The AI models, trained on pre-existing notions around beauty and gender, can unwittingly perpetuate stereotypes, thereby influencing specific outcomes in areas like recruitment.
A separate study found that DALL-E 2, an AI-image generator, linked titles such as ‘CEO’ or ‘director’ with white men 97% of the time, further fuelling the concern over AI perpetuating racial stereotypes.
AI’s foray into predicting political views based on facial characteristics is an exciting development. However, it also flags vital issues around privacy and the risk of reinforcing societal biases.
