Xiaomi has built its name on smartphones and maybe even just fully electric cars. But now, it is taking a different route for its next vehicle range. The company has introduced SkyNomad, a new SUV series that uses gas assisted electric technology and places everyday cabin life at the front of the design.
Announced last week, SkyNomad becomes the second product series under Xiaomi EV. The company’s SU7 and YU7 models were built for people who enjoy driving. SkyNomad is a little different as Xiaomi says it designed the vehicle around commuting, family travel, working from a parked car and even camping, treating the cabin as a living space that adapts through the day.
The first models, called the N70 and N90, are also in Chinese regulatory filings reported by CarNewsChina. Those filings speak about the hardware behind Xiaomi’s first extended range electric vehicles, giving an early look at how the company plans to mix electric driving with a petrol powered generator.
Why Did Xiaomi Build A Gas-Assisted EV?
Battery electric vehicles depend only on electricity stored in their battery packs. An extended range electric vehicle, which is called an EREV, works differently. The wheels stay electric, but a small petrol engine generates electricity when the battery runs low.
For SkyNomad, Xiaomi has a 1.5 litre petrol engine as well as electric motors and battery packs. According to CarNewsChina, the engine does not drive the wheels – instead it works as a generator, sending electricity to the battery so the vehicle can continue running without relying only on battery power.
Xiaomi says work on SkyNomad started in early 2023 after noticing that many people were spending long hours in their cars. Things like daily commutes and road trips with the family influenced the project. The company wrote that buyers really do care about how comfortable they feel in the car during those trips.

What Makes This Car Different?
SkyNomad uses Xiaomi’s new Kunlun Architecture, which the company says it developed specifically for cabins that can be rearranged. The flat floor and long track seating system let owners switch between layouts for passengers, luggage or pets, then rearrange the interior into a workspace, lounge or family area once the vehicle is parked.
Xiaomi says this layout comes from combining AI, its connected device ecosystem and smart manufacturing. The company wants the vehicle to work with the rest of its Human × Car × Home ecosystem, which already works with smartphones, home devices and electric vehicles.
Lei Jun, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi, explained the “why” behind the project in a post on Weibo. He wrote, “Our answer was to let intelligence define the space, to build a living interior that moves with you.”
What Tech Is Under The Bonnet?
According to CarNewsChina, the entry level N70 uses a rear electric motor producing 210 kW, or 282 hp, with a 52 kWh battery supplied by Sunwoda. Xiaomi lists an electric driving range of 270 km before the petrol generator takes over. Fuel consumption with an empty battery is 5.8 litres per 100 km and the top speed is 190 km/h.
The four wheel drive N70 Max adds a front electric motor, taking total output to 310 kW. This version uses a larger 76 kWh battery from CALB and reaches 380 km on electric power. Fuel consumption with a drained battery comes to 6.2 litres per 100 km.
CarNewsChina also reports that the larger N90 SUV uses the same petrol generator and twin electric motor system with 310 kW of output. It comes with a 76 kWh battery, offers 370 km of electric range and records fuel consumption of 6.26 litres per 100 km after the battery has been used. Buyers will have five seat and seven seat layouts, and previous information said that the front seats can even rotate through 180 degrees.
According to China EV DataTracker, Xiaomi Auto sold 185,055 vehicles during the first half of 2026, which came to 17.2% more than the same stage last year. SkyNomad gives Xiaomi a new option for buyers who want electric driving but also want the reassurance of a petrol generator for your longer trips.
