While there are plenty of different ways to combat climate change (in theory), many experts believe that one of the industries with the most potential is agricultural technology. Not only does agriculture participate in a great deal of carbon emissions, but the industry itself also has a lot of potential to create new and innovative ways to decrease carbon emissions.
Thus, reducing the negative impact that agricultural activities are having on the environment, as well as making use of farming methods to become more sustainable in other industries too, provides a great deal of exciting opportunity for the future of fighting against global warming.
Here are the top 10 agritech startups in the UK that are aiming to do just that.
1. Pastoral – Regenerative Farming
Founded in 2021, Pastoral is committed to improving livestock farming practices by making them more sustainable. It’s attempting to use IoT (Internet of Things) technology and remote sensing solutions to reduce farmers’ carbon footprints.
To do this, Pastoral has developed a complex system that allows it to collect real-time data on animal behaviour and grazing patterns, allowing them to make informed decisions and to promote sustainable, regenerative farming practices. So far, Pastoral AI, based in London, has raised at least $300 thousand in venture capital.
2. MilkingCloud
Milking Cloud is a farming management system that aims to improve farmers’ productivity by means of farm management software.
The technology is designed to help farmers keep records of everything that happens on their farms by means of a combination IoT hardware and specific software that can keep track of cattle, calves and more. Milking Cloud’s services include gestation tracking, health management, nutrition planning and milk management for cattle, saving farmers both time and money.
Milking Cloud was founded in in the UK in 2018 and has received millions of dollars of investment since then.
3. Sustainabl. Planet Ltd.
Sustainabl. Planet Ltd. is working towards providing sustainable food source for African and Middle Eastern countries, and their focus on growing water lentils which contain 45% protein. It aims to scale up its production to an industrial level by combining innovative farming practices with advanced agricultural technology.
Part of the company’s tactic is to make use of less arable land than is normally preferred and plant water lentils which require less water and produce higher levels of protein than alternatives like soy beans.
Sustainabl. Planet was founded in 2021 and is working towards achieving a plethora of different objectives in the world of sustainability.
4. Breedr
Having started off with only a handful of farms as customers has grown into a massive and constantly growing agritech startup, with over 1,000 different farms now using Breedr’s software.
Ian Wheal, the founder of this startup, has created a way in which farming data can not only be captured effectively and efficiently, but analysed and transformed into actionable insights.
Breedr provides farmers with a holistic farm management system that aims to help farmers save both time and money in their operations, while improving the quality of everything they do and produce.
5. Seawater Solutions
Seawater Solutions is a Glaswegian agritech startup that is using innovative techniques in an effort to contribute to sustainability efforts and climate resilience.
To do this, it introduces wetland ecosystems onto both farmland and degraded coastal areas around the world with the intention of growing salt-tolerant crops by means of seawater.
Seawater Solutions comprises of a team of biologists and environmental engineers working to find sustainable ways to use salt water to combat climate issues including erosion and high carbon emissions.
6. HyveGeo
Founded in Cambridge in 2022, HyveGeo’s work is simple: they grow microalgae for the purpose of reducing carbon dioxide in the environment, ultimately reducing the negative effects of global warming. The second goal behind planting microalgae is to create a sustainable food source.
HyveGeo is attempting to use previously unutilised land in the desert, along with sunlight and wastewater, to create fertile lands, with the goal of combatting climate change at the core of its mission.

To do this, this startup is using a combination of acoustic technology and environmental sensors to develop a broad and ever-growing range of products to help optimise pollination in the environment.
AgriSound was founded in York in 2020 and since its inception, has taken on important partners and significant funding to support its endeavours.
8. MOOTRAL UK
Mootral was founded in Arbertillery in the UK in 2016, and since then it’s grown from strength to strength.
With a dual objective of tackling climate change and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Mootral is working towards reducing methane emissions from ruminants and ending the use of antibiotics on monogastric livestock.
This startup provides farmers with food-related solutions to these problems that Thomas Hafner, Mootral founder and CEO, asserts will help combat the issue of climate change more quickly and effectively than ever before.
9. AgroHQ Ltd.
AgroHQ, founded in London in 2022, provides farmers with an effective and efficient farming management system by means of a digitised application.
