Water conservation is one of the most essential environmental endeavours of our time, as it aims to ensure that humans have not only enough water, but reliable sources of water to sustain life.
In the world of tech startups, there are plenty of different ways in which advanced technology can be used to provide water conservation solutions, by developing new ways to sanitise and filtrate otherwise unusable water, by gaining access to new water sources and by developing ways in which to detect water wastage, among other things.
Why Is Water Conservation Important?
Well, water conservation is essential for obvious reasons, first and foremost – that is, humans and all living organisms require water to sustain life.
The problem is, not only is water a limited resource – potable water, that is – but there are plenty of ways in which water is being wasted, polluted and more, giving rise to an increasing number of water crises around the world.
The good news, however, is that with advanced technological innovations, we’ve managed to develop creative ways to be smart about how we use water, where we get it from, how to save it and how to transform “dirty water” into potable water.
The Top 10 Water Conservation Startups
We’re going to explore some exciting new companies from all over the world that have and are busy coming up with creative and innovative ways to mitigate the risks of water shortages around the world.
Here are the top 10 water conservation startups.
1. Wai Technologies
Founded in Cairo in 2020, Wai Technologies produces intelligent water-management systems that combine artificial intelligence technology and IoT devices to closely monitor water utility pipeline operations.
By means of advanced technology and analytic systems, Wai Technologies is able to issue early alerts regarding network pressure management, issues with pipelines and more. It does so by means of geographic information systems (GIS) and other hydraulic models.
The objective of this technology is to minimise downtime of water supply and services and to reduce non-revenue water (NRW).
2. Dracoss
Tunisian-based water-conservation startup Dracoss has developed advanced technology that allows for wastewater reclamation by means of water treatment technology, machine learning and various Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
In fact, it’s designed and manufactured a machine that is capable of collecting and cleaning water and then rechanneling it in such a way that it can be reused. This water comes from washers, dryer, air conditioners and even rainwater.
Dracoss was founded in 2021 and offers a unique, high-tech water purification system to remove 99% of contaminants.
3. KarioT
KarioT is a water conservation tech startup that is using advanced software and IoT devices to track water consumption, flow, quality, level, pressure and more. This contributes to keeping track of how much water is being used both residential and commercial, as well as efforts to detect water leakages.
Furthermore, this Indian-based startup used AI technology to analyse old data and predict future consumption needs and trends.
Another function KarioT’s technology offers is the ability to analyse water content in terms of parameters including pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total dissolved liquids (TDL), chlorine, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and more. The purpose of this monitoring is to prevent water exploitation maintain high water quality.

4. Uravu Labs
Founded in Bangalore, India in 2017, Uravu Labs aims to combat the water shortage in India by means of technology that is helping to create more potable water.
This water conservation tech startup designed and created a device called an Aquapanel that works by means of solar thermal technology. That is, it produces potable water by means of water vapour absorption during the night. This solution is completely renewable and represents incredible opportunities to solve water crises all over the world.
Uravu Labs was co-founded by Pardeep Garg, Venkatesh RY, Swapnil Shrivastav and Govinda Balaji B and is already making waves, so to speak, in the conversation industry.
5. Elementric
Undetected water leakages in industrial spaces make up for a large amount of wasted water in the commercial world, and Swedish startup Elementric is producing technology help detect and deal with slow leaks in buildings.
Launched in Stockholm in 2021, this water conservation startup has designed and developed a patented mat that is able to detect leaks by means of an integrated circuit board that is programmed in such a way that it’s able to communicate with the cloud when water is present.
6. Ekatvam
Ekatvam is another Indian startup, based in Thane, and it is using a muti-stakeholder accounting tool (MIDAS) for farmers.
This software provides farmers with information on water availability, demand in various villages, seasonal water budgets and more.
Launched in 2021, Ekatvam provides farmers with access to a web-based dashboard that features automatic data triangulation from a combination of both primary and secondary sources (manual and satellite data respectively).
The overall objective is for this technology to provide a way for farmers to visualise the real-world impact of water conservation by means of visual simulations.
7. WaiHome
WaiHome develops on-site wastewater treatment systems for residential use. It does so by means of algal photobioreactors that allow passive wastewater treatment while simultaneously serving as a smart and economical option to replace septic tanks.
This water conservation startup, founded in Honolulu in 2021, is providing a tankless wastewater solution that uses treatment panels and a composter, thus reducing groundwater pollution and damage to coastal ecosystems that is currently occurring due to harmful and abrasive wastewater solutions that use septic tanks.
8. Remote Waters
Founded by Chilean entrepreneur, Pablo Cassorla in 2018, Remote Waters is a water conservation tech startup that is developing water filtration systems. They’re aiming to provide clean water to communities, industries and the government too.
The technology makes use of solar panels and a plethora of monitoring devices to filtrate both groundwater and salt water to produce potable drinking water.
Remote Waters received $395,000 of seeding money and today, it’s based in Santiago.
9. Stor Water
Launched in San Francisco in 2021, Stor Water is using machine learning-based tools to be able to detect water leakages more efficiently and effectively than ever before.
It monitors water quality, records consumption and detects anomalies by means of real-time monitoring systems.
Stor Water also uses its collected data to create useful comparative reports about water from one location to the next. The primary purpose of this startup is to save water and ensure the efficiency of water processing and monitoring systems.
10. Lishtot
Lishtot is an Israeli-based tech startup aiming to provide an affordable solution for water-quality testing in underprivileged parts of the world, in including parts of Israel.
Founded in 2015 by Alan Bauer and Netanel Raisch, Lishot has developed handheld testing devices that affordable and affective in working towards providing more and more people with high-quality drinking water. This startup’s primary device, the Test Drop Pro, makes use of an electronic circuit to detect contaminants in water.
