What is tiney?

tiney is a London-based startup that trains up a new generation of childminders with a focus on pedagogical care. Newly qualified childminders are also then supported in setting up their own ‘micro nurseries’. The network of home-run nurseries is ever-growing across London and the UK, and it’s answering to the desperate need for more flexible, local wraparound childcare services.

tiney is regulated by Ofsted, meaning they are licensed to train, support and quality assure their tiney childminders. This means you can rest assured that your children are being provided the best care.

“As self-employed business owners, our childminders are in charge of their business decisions, such as agreeing contracts with families, but tiney exists to support and regulate their work, and can even mediate when needed.”

Who Founded tiney?

tiney was founded by Brett Wigdortz, Edd Read & John Newbold in 2019. They shared the same views that early years education was in crisis, families couldn’t access the care they so desperately needed, and children were starting school unprepared, so decided to do something about it. That’s when tiney was born.

“During my time leading Teach First I saw young children up and down the country who were starting school without the basic emotional, social and education skills to be school ready.” – Brett Wigdortz OBE, co-founder and CEO of tiney.

What is tiney’s Mission?

On their website, tiney emphasises how a quality early education is paramount for a child’s development. As such, they are committed to training a new generation of childminders, helping to drive up the standards of early years education for children.

“Our mission is to enable affordable childcare for parents, high quality early education for children and amazing careers for childminders.”

How Did tiney Succeed During COVID-19?

The COVID-19 pandemic struck merely months after tiney was founded. As schools up and down the country closed, the need for childminding services increased. Despite people being cautious of the spread of the virus, the service which tiney provided was hugely beneficial to a lot of people.

“Despite this unexpected curveball, there are now hundreds of tiney homes around the country, run by childminders from a wide range of backgrounds but all united by a mission to change children’s lives while working flexibly around their own families. We’re proud of our big, warm, vibrant professional community of early years educators; they are the heart of tiney.”
